Earlier wilt disease was confined to northern belt of sugarcane particularly Bihar state from where it spread to U.P., Punjab & Haryana. It is transmitted mainly through infected seed setts. The fungus can also survive in the soil. This disease commonly occurs with the infection of red rot & poor crop is more prone to wilt infection. Disease intensity largely depends upon faulty drainage & prevailing draught or in sufficient moisture conditions in the field.
Symptoms

• The midrib of affected leaves become yellow while the leaf lamina remains green.
• In advance stages, drying of the leaves, shrinking of stalk occur after splitting of such canes the internal tissues get brick red colour and later it becomes brown in colour.
• In severe case boat shaped cavities were formed and the whole stalk become lighter in weight, cane become hollow making them worthless for milling.
