White-Fly

White-Fly

Damage Symptoms
• The nymphs of white flies suck the sap from the undersurface of the leaves.
• As a result, the leaves turn yellow and pinkish in severe cases of infestation and gradually dry up.
• Heavily infested leaves are covered by the sooty mould, (Capnodium sp.,) which adversely affects photosynthesis.
• Yellow streaks appear on the infested leaves and the crop acquired a yellowish-green appearance.
• Its attack is generally associated with poor crops, particularly ratoons which usually remain neglected.
• The build-up of the pest population is rapid under water-logged conditions and in soils deficient in nitrogen.
• Drought also during summer and dry spells during monsoon profoundly influence white-fly buildup.

Management
• The crop should be properly looked after and adequately manured with a nitrogenous fertilizer. In lowlying areas where water-logging is common, rationing of the crop should be avoided.
• Detreshing and destruction of leaves bearing white-fly puparia before the emergence of the adult which can be determined by the presence of “T” shaped split in the dorsum of the puparia.
• Spray Imidacloprid 17.8 % SL@ 500ml/ha and  2% urea mix with 1000 lit of water.
