Autumn season Sugarcane

Despite the fact that the yield of autumn sugarcane is 20-25% higher than spring sugarcane and the sugar recovery is 0.5 units higher, its area is limited. In the initial stage, there is a lot of space between two rows of autumn sugarcane and the vegetative growth of the crop is very slow due to low temperature. In such a situation, by growing intercrops in the vacant spaces and making proper use of resources, the area of autumn sugarcane cultivation can be increased by making it more sustainable.
The method of planting potatoes with sugarcane by paired row method has been developed by Sugarcane Research Institute, Pusa and it has been found to be quite suitable for farmers. Under this method, the yield of sugarcane and potato is equal to that of pure crop and the seed rate is also equal to that of pure crop. In this method, two rows of potatoes are planted between two rows of sugarcane and the distance between sugarcane and potatoes is kept at 30 cm. The distance between the seed potatoes is 30 cm. In this method, the potatoes are planted in both rows at an angle and care is taken to ensure that the potatoes of both rows do not fall in a straight line. It looks like a twin row.
