Intercropping with spring sugarcane
- The area of pulses can be increased in Bihar by intercropping moong and urd with spring sugarcane. After plucking the pods of these crops, 20-25 kg nitrogen per hectare is saved by turning the plants in the soil between two rows of sugarcane in green state.
- In intercropping, the quantity of sugarcane seed is 100% i.e. equal to pure cultivation (500-600 kg/hectare) but the quantity of seeds of inter crops is used according to their number of rows. Example: In sugarcane cowpea (1:1), the number of rows of sugarcane is 100% but the number of rows of cowpea is 50% of the pure crop, hence the quantity of cowpea seed will be 50% (20 kg per hectare) of the quantity of pure crop seed.
