Planting Method and Spacing

Flat method:
• In this method furrows are open with a bullock drawn or tractor drawn ridger about 10 - 15 cm deep at a row distance of 75 to 90 centimeter.
• The most common and recommended spacing is 90 cm.
• The three bud setts are placed in them bud to bud taking care that from three bud sett, four setts must be fall in each running 1 meter row length of furrow.
• Immediately after planting, furrows are covered with 5 - 6 centimeter of soil and field is leveled by using heavy plank.
 Trench method:
• Trench method is adopted to save the crop from lodging.
• Trenches should be dug with the help of spade or tractor drawn trencher at a row distance of 90 cm to 120 cm.
• Trenches should be about 30 cm wide with a depth of 25 to 30 cm.
• The placement of setts in trenches is same as furrow method.
• Before planting, recommended dose of manure and fertilizers should be applied in trenches.
• In this method setts are planted deep in the moist layer, they get adequate moisture led to good germination and mother shoot population.
Paired row method
• In this method, two cane rows are brought together with a distance of 30 cm with 90 to 120 cm gap between two paired rows.
• In the paired row system, furrows are made with a bullock drawn ridger and widened the furrows manually by spade.
• In some areas paired rows are also made with tractor drawn paired row maker to a depth of 15 cm.
• The width of furrows should be 20 to 30 cm. Setts are placed by end to end in the furrows and field is leveled by planting.
Spacing
• The spacing followed ranges from 90 - 120 cm between the rows in furrow and trench method and 30: 90 - 120 cm for paired row planting.
• But the most common and recommended row spacing for furrow and trench method of planting is 90 cm.
• For planting, bullock drawn or tractor drawn ridger, paired row maker and trencher are common.
